Christodoulou<\/strong><br \/>\nProject Team: Christos Pasadakis, Stelios Zenieris, Giorgos Papiotis<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Architectural Approach<\/strong><br \/>\nThe renovation of the Markideio Theatre aimed at upgrading and promoting the area and creating conditions and synergies for the dynamic activation of the complex with multiple benefits in upgrading the urban fabric of Paphos. The main aim of our interventions was to create a public landmark for the city and revitalise the area. The successful enhancement of Markideio provides the possibility for economic, social and cultural boost of the whole area. The aim of the conceptual approach was to create a cultural operator for the city of Paphos.<\/p>\n<p>The major problems of the existing theatre related to its isolation and lack of connection with the urban fabric given the adjacent marble workshop and a car garage, the dysfunctional placement of the stage in the southern part of the building behind the existing entrance, the arrangement of the seats with a slight inclination given the building\u2019s previous use as a movie theatre, its dysfunctional connection with the surrounding parking lots and the congestion of the entrance and the building in general. The most important challenge was the redefinition of the centrality of a public building, indeed the only theatrical space in Paphos.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Connection with the urban fabric<\/strong><br \/>\nThe relocation of the marble workshop and the car garage enables the theatre to better connect with the two adjacent roads surrounding it, and interact with the surrounding area and the city itself. The cafeteria extension to the south towards Andrea Geroudi street, creates an opening to the street and joins the cafeteria with the open plaza.<br \/>\nOn the west, the extension of the foyer and the creation of a second entrance that leads to the adjacent Karavellas parking lot creates morphologically a wide fa\u00e7ade marking the significance of this cultural space in connection with both the built environment and the rest of the city.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the building is organically connected with the plaza, through multiple options for movement, with the main reference point being the performance space wrapped in wood. In this way, even though the existing structure rests at a distance from the street, the connection with the urban fabric is achieved. Thus, a public plaza , energized through the cafeteria is created. The tree landscaping was strategically calculated to provide shade from western sunlight, creating the conditions for a space of rest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Theater functionality<\/strong><br \/>\nLocating the stage in the northern part of the plot enables the creation of an active public space in the south through which visitors can enter the theatre, as well as the unobstructed service entrance in the west from Karavellas parking lot. A new seating arrangement is created within the existing envelope with a theatrical arrangement of the seats contrary to the existing ones that were only slightly inclined to serve the previous movie theatre. Access corridors are created along the eastern and western enclosure of the performance space. New wooden surfaces are installed for the ceilings and walls of the performance space, their arrangement dictated by the acoustics evaluation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Forming the plaza and open spaces<\/strong><br \/>\n3 green spaces\/plazas are created.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The public plaza is part of the cityscape and is always accessible independently of the theatre. It is a transitional space from the city to the theatre, enhancing the theatre\u2019s character as a public building.<\/li>\n<li>The indoor courtyard in the western side of the theatre is semi-public. It is a resting place for both the audience during performances and people working there. It is adjacent to the reception hall and passageway leading from the outside entrance to the performance space, providing natural light and shadow from the trees. At the same time, it may be used as a bigger foyer in the summer.<\/li>\n<li>The private courtyard at the eastern border with access to the dressing rooms can be exclusively used by the artists to relax.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Entrance and cafeteria<\/strong><br \/>\nThe extension of the entrance to the west and the siting of the cafeteria towards Andrea Geroudi street demarcate the public plaza and clearly define the relation between the theatre and the road network, creating at the same time a protective shell towards the plaza blocking the view and noise coming from the adjacent service areas such as the gas station in the east and the parking lot and bus refuelling area in the north-west.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dressing rooms<\/strong><br \/>\nThe dressing rooms located in the eastern part of the plot in a new ground floor structure, can be accessed from the entrance and give direct access to the stage. A private courtyard is created providing natural light and ventilation and can be used by the artists as a private resting place.
